The raccoon ( Procyon lotor ) is a medium-sized mammal native to North America. It is easily recognizable by its characteristic "mask" and bushy, ringed tail. Raccoons are extremely adaptable and inhabit both forests and urban areas. They are omnivores and feed on fruits, insects, small vertebrates, and human waste. In Germany, they are considered an invasive species and have spread rapidly in recent decades.
