The rat ( Rattus rattus ), also known as the black rat, is a small rodent originally from the Indian subcontinent that has spread worldwide, particularly to urban areas. It is primarily nocturnal, an omnivore, and known for its exceptional climbing abilities. Black rats commonly inhabit attics, trees, and the upper floors of buildings. With a body length of approximately 10 to 28 cm and a weight of 100 to 450 g, they are easily recognizable by their long tails and pointed snouts. Rats play an important role in the ecosystem but can be considered pests in urban areas.
