The European polecat ( Mustela putorius ), also known as the European polecat, belongs to the weasel family and is the largest member of the genus Mustela in Germany. Its distinctive feature is its white facial mask, which sets it apart from other mustelids. Polecats are primarily crepuscular and nocturnal and inhabit a variety of habitats, including forests, meadows, and wetlands. They are skilled hunters and feed mainly on small mammals, birds, and amphibians. When threatened, they can secrete a foul-smelling substance from their anal glands, which is why they are also known as "stink weasels."
