The European pine marten ( Martes martes ), also known as the European pine marten, is a skilled climber belonging to the weasel family ( Mustelidae ). It prefers to inhabit contiguous forests in Europe, as well as Asia Minor and North Asia. With its slender, elongated body and bushy tail, it reaches a total length of up to 80 cm and a weight of up to 1.8 kg. Its fur is dark to chestnut brown, with a characteristic bright yellow throat patch. The European pine marten is primarily nocturnal and feeds on small mammals, birds, insects, and plant matter such as berries and fruits. It is a solitary animal and marks its territory with scent glands.
